Launching Minds: TYE's Physics and Kinematics Adventure at Fairfax Library

December 18th, 2023

The City of Fairfax Regional Library provided TYE an opportunity to host a workshop on physics and kinematics. With the library's commitment to educational enrichment, this collaboration was a natural fit. The workshop aimed to make the often complex principles of motion accessible and engaging for students, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for physics.

The workshop began with an interactive session where TYE mentors introduced the fundamental concepts of physics and kinematics. Students learned about velocity, acceleration, and the laws of motion in a way that was relatable and easy to grasp. This foundational knowledge set the stage for the hands-on activity that followed.

The highlight of the workshop was the construction of high-powered catapults. Guided by TYE mentors, the students learned about potential and kinetic energy, projectile motion, and the mechanics of catapults. They were tasked with designing and building their own catapults using everyday materials like wooden sticks, and rubber bands.

Once the catapults were ready, it was time for the main event – the catapult competition. The students aimed their creations at designated targets, competing for accuracy and distance. The excitement was palpable as the room filled with cheers and laughter. To further motivate the participants, TYE awarded prizes for the most accurate shots and the longest distances achieved. Beyond the physical prizes, all students received certificates of participation, recognizing their dedication to learning and their enthusiasm for STEM subjects.

The TYE physics and kinematics workshop at the City of Fairfax Regional Library was more than just an event; it was an investment in the future. By making physics engaging and approachable, TYE empowered young minds to see the possibilities in science and technology. These students not only gained a deeper understanding of motion but also developed problem-solving skills, teamwork, and confidence.
